DJ Ahmet

  • Lansdown Hall & Gallery Lansdown Stroud, GL5 1BB (map)

Somewhere in the borderlands of the North Macedonian countryside and the internet’s reach, lives 15-year-old Ahmet with his father and little brother Naim. Ahmet has left his studies, and Naim hasn’t spoken since their mother’s death. Their father grieves his late wife, and has a sour attitude toward music, and Ahmet does his best to hide his double life from his father.

By day Ahmet is a shepherd, taking responsibility for his family’s livelihood. His nights, however, are dedicated to his one true, secret love: electronic dance music. It also brings him together with Aya, the girl next door. One night the stars align, thanks to algorithms, and they end up carrying out their vision in the crossfire of the conservative community’s and the modern world’s expectations. Ahmet installs a new sound system to his tractor, which becomes a moving disco. As expected, this results in a skirmish, but a transitional force has already started moving inside people’s heads.

Director Georgi M. Unkovski’s promising debut is a mixture of traditional coming-of-age, vibrant colours, and warm humour, in which the young search for a way to express themselves, and the sheep rave.
